Simple Step by Step Guide to Sew a Baby Minky Blanket

When it comes to sewing a blanket for your baby, Minky fabric comes in first! Why? Because it is the softest, can match any style, and lasts for a long time.

If you want to sew a Minky blanket for your baby or gift someone, this guide will assist you in how to do that. Follow these step by step instructions.

1. Select Fabric

Minky fabric comes in a variety of colors, prints, or designs, choose the one that you like the most. When you start searching for it, we will recommend you assure you’re only using high quality minky as it is not all created equal. See the collection at Baby Want Designs; where they use the highest quality on the market. We highly recommend their product line as it’s the highest quality we have tested.

If it is your first experience with sewing Minky then we recommend you practice before sewing your primary blanket as Minky is one of the more difficult fabrics to use. This guide is only to safe some money, minky is very expensive and time consuming to work with.

2. Size of blanket

Almost all have different choices for blanket size, it depends, and for whom you are sewing a blanket. Check out this size guide we took from Baby Want Designs  and choose accordingly. These are there primary sizes that we found work best!

Baby Blankets: 30x36"

Toddler Blanket: 3x5'

Youth Blanket: 4.5x5'

Adult Blanket: 5x6'

XL Adult Blanket: 5x7.5’

Start by cutting fabric according to the size marked. Keep 1-inch extra for seam allowance.

Now, this is the time to pin. Minky fabric tends to slip while sewing, therefore while sewing corners, pin your Minky fabric so it will not move.

3. Sew & Flip

Sewing is much easier than positioning it.  You can use a normal sewing machine but assure your tension is set right. Sew around all edges with a half-inch stitching allowance. Also, leave the four-inch gap at one side to turn. Once you’re finished, remove pins, trim excess fabric from corners.  Insert hand into the gap and turn the blanket's sides out. Now stitch the top according to the color of the blanket. Your baby blanket is ready. Some companies use special tactics and different sewing techniques. This is to make a very simple minky blanket and safe some money!
